Hawaii Waterfall Hike
The island state of Hawaii includes the remarkable Hawaii Volcanoes National Park which covers over 500 square miles and encompasses several distinct ecosystems. It is here that you will find the famous Hawaii waterfall hike or, perhaps more accurately, the incredible Hawaii waterfall hiking adventure.
Visitors to Hawaii can explore the volcanic history of the planet dating back over 70 million years and visit live volcanoes which form part of the famed Ring of Fire. These include Mauna Loa, which at 13,677 feet is the world's largest volcano and Kilauea, which is considered to be one of the world's most active volcanoes.
Hawaii is a paradise for hikers and boasts thousands of trails which wind through trees and along the ridges formed by lava deposits. One leisurely and extremely enjoyable hike is that across the black sand beaches of Kalapana where you can see the 350 year old Thurston lava tube. Another is the 4 mile hike along Kilauea Iki where the trail descends through the rainforest into a streaming crater.
One area which is most certainly worth a visit is Keanakako'i Crater which is an active volcano which last erupted in 1982. This is a fascinating sight in itself but also affords an excellent view of the Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa mountains, where you will also be able to see some of the world's largest astronomical observatories.
Not far away you will also come across Devastation Trail from which you can witness the cinder outfall from the eruption of Kilauea Iki in 1959. One word of warning though - sulfur dioxide and ash from the volcanic activity in this area can make breathing difficult and so if you are sensitive to this you should take care.
Just under a mile from Steaming Bluffs you will also find Kilauea Overlook from where you can get a very good view of the caldera which, in 1959, was a lava lake that produced fountains of molten lava up to 2,000 feet high and today is an opening one mile long and some 3,000 feet across.
If you enjoy hiking then you will certainly enjoy Hawaii and will also find plenty of assistance such as that provided by Hawaii big island volcano hiking tours. Amongst some of the real beauty of Hawaii too are its many waterfalls and a Manoa Fall hike is an absolute must for any visitor.
